How to choose a car amplifier

Do you enjoy listening to music while driving? Are you the type to sing out loud your favorite songs when everyone else on the road looks at you confused? Many people feel that the car is the only place where they can fully let themselves go to the tunes of their beloved band. This is true especially for people who live with housemates or live in an apartment block with neighbors that do not tolerate loud music.

But few cars come with a sound system that produces sounds of high enough quality. Especially when driving at high speeds, the noise from outside the rear of the engine can sometimes make it impossible to hear any melody. That’s where car amplifiers come in.

Most cars nowadays come with an amplifier built-in together with the speakers but the quality and abilities of these amplifiers are usually substandard and not enough for many drivers. That’s why a lot of people choose to install an external amplifier. An external car amplifier can give you clear sound at any volume so that you can enjoy every crisp note of your favorite music. But not all car amplifiers will work properly in each car. You need to think about what kind of result you want to get from your amplifier before you make a purchase.

What to consider when buying a car amplifier

Power

Generally speaking, choose an amplifier that has more power than your speakers. Since the amplifier’s job is to power up your speakers it cannot have less power. Not checking this can result in your speakers becoming damaged. Check the RMS (Root Mean Square) value of your speakers and get an amplifier that is around 100-150% more powerful.

Channel number

You need to have an amplifier with multiply channels if your car uses more than one speaker. Multichannel amplifiers have from 2 to 6 channels. So before you choose one, count all the speakers in your car to make sure that the amplifier will be able to connect to them all. If you have a subwoofer, you will need a separate channel for it.

Size

Check how much space you have available in your car to install an amplifier. Consider where would be the best place to attach it to and check the measurements so that you don’t buy a large amplifier that won’t fit anywhere in your car. Don’t forget that you have to wire it to the speakers so pick a place where it can be easily done.

If you don’t know much about amplifiers it is best to choose a trusted brand that is known for making high-quality amplifiers. One such brand is Power Acoustik. They specialize in car and marine audio systems and they have many different models available in a range of prices. A Power Acoustik Amp is a good starting point for drivers who want to try and improve the sound quality produced by their cars.
